Runners

Runner rugs

A runner is a long, narrow rug built for a space you move through rather than sit in — hallways, entryways, galley kitchens, the length of a staircase landing, or either side of a bed. Because runners take concentrated foot traffic along a narrow path, construction matters more here than in almost any other size.

Sizing a runner

Leave roughly four to six inches of bare floor on each long side, so the runner reads as deliberate rather than wall-to-wall. In a hallway, stop the runner short of the ends rather than running it into the doorways. If a hall is longer than your longest runner, two runners placed end to end with a gap look better than one that is visibly too short.

What lasts in a hallway

Flatweaves and low-pile wool wear best in a corridor and are least likely to catch a door. A thick shag in a hallway will crush along the walking line within months and show it. If the runner sits over a hard floor, use a non-slip underlay — a runner that slides on tile is a genuine hazard on a staircase or at the top of basement stairs.

Our runners are made in wool, jute, silk blends and cotton, in lengths from short entry runners through to extra-long hallway sizes. Priced in Canadian dollars, shipped across Canada.
